Tony Covell is Father to Phillip Covell and most recently Operated LEQ Ltd with me. He was previously founder and CEO of VFG PLC (formerly Video Film & Grip Co Ltd), Cinefocus Ltd, Videofocus Ltd, and ARC Film Services. In addition Tony is a trained precision engineer, and former Camera maintenance Engineer, working on productions such as Papillon, Black Beauty, and You Can’t Win ’em All (Dubious Patriots).

LEQ Ltd (2001-2018)

Established by Phillip Covell in 1995, LEQ became a Limited Company in 2001, with Tony Covell Joining as Managing Director. As a boutique production services, equipment rental, sales and manufacturing company it serviced a diverse clientele of Film & TV Productions, Broadcasting Corporations, and Corporate clients. The company more recently transitioned into a Sales and Consultancy company. Tony is now semi-retired, but still enjoys getting involved in the odd bit of business.

VFG PLC (1991-2001)

  • Was a leading UK based facilities house for Broadcast, Film, Grip and Lighting equipment founded by CEO Tony Covell.
  • Expansion was initially funded by venture capital, with a floatation on the Alternate Investment Marketin 1997.
  • By 2000 it had established itself as a major global competitor, employing some 500 staff by 2000.
  • It was first to establish multiple operations throughout the UK with bases located in: London – Wembley, Pinewood, Shepperton & Bow Studios; Manchester; Glasgow; Belfast; Bristol; Cardiff, Dublin and The Isle of Man.
  • Additional Offices were located in Los Angelesand Sydney, with representation in South Africa.
  • Business interests also included: Optical filter manufacturer Formatt Filters; Industry sales outlets; an Equipment Finance brokerage; and an interest in the Local Broadcast Group (LBG).

Cinefocus Ltd (1974-1991)

Cinefocus was founded by CEO Tony Covell and became a top tier Rental, Sales and Crewing company, supplying equipment from a variety of manufacturers such as ARRI, Moviecam, Aaton, Egripment, Chapman, FGV Panther. Videofocus Ltdwas the company’s Broadcast division, offering principally Sony Broadcast cameras. As a sales company Cinefocus was agent for Egripment, introducing the Tulip Crane; FGV introducing the Panther Dolly system among others.

ARC Film Services Ltd

Also founded by Tony Covell was a company, specifically set up for the manufacture and sale of the Focus System, including Focus Track, the Focus Micro-Jib and the Focus Dolly which continues to be manufactured by Egripment. The System was also sold by Cinefocus, VFG and Egripment.
